Mardi Gras in Ioannina

Carnival in Ioannina is one of the city’s most important cultural events and attracts large numbers of visitors from all over Greece every year. It is a period of intense activity, organized events, and traditional customs that have been kept alive for decades.

A central element of the celebration is the “Tzamas,” the large bonfires lit on the evening of the last Sunday of Carnival in many neighborhoods of the city. Cultural associations, local organizations, and residents organize the events, offering music, traditional dances, and local delicacies. Visitors have the opportunity to actively participate in the celebration, getting to know the music and culinary traditions of the region up close.

The tradition of Tzalamon is linked to the end of the carnival season and the beginning of Lent, maintaining the symbolic character of renewal and collectivity. Today, the custom is a major reason to visit the city during the carnival season and is part of the broader cultural profile of Ioannina.
The city’s location, next to Lake Pamvotida, as well as the historic surroundings of the Ioannina Castle, offer additional opportunities for sightseeing and recreation, combining the experience of the events with attractions of great interest.

For those seeking a destination that combines tradition, authenticity, and organized cultural activities, Ioannina during the Carnival season is a comprehensive and attractive choice.
