Old Market of Ioannina

The Old Market of Ioannina, centered around what is now Independence Street, has long been one of the city’s most distinctive hubs of commercial activity. With roots dating back to the period of Ottoman rule, the historic bazaar developed into a vibrant hub of commerce and social life.

The market stretched from the area of Giali Kafene (today’s Georgiou Stavrou Square) to Averof Street, while it also expanded into the surrounding alleys, reaching as far as the Church of Agios Nikolaos Agoras and the Kritharopazaro. During the Ottoman period, the market streets were covered, with special openings—the so-called “batziaades”—that allowed natural light to enter, creating a unique and functional urban environment.

During the 17th century, the market experienced a great boom, with more than 1,900 shops and approximately 400 different trades, known as “zanatia.” The professionals were organized into guilds, the so-called “isnafia,” contributing to the development of a strong commercial ecosystem, with high-quality products such as silk and furs
.
Today, the area retains its commercial character, making it one of the liveliest streets in Ioannina. Although its form has evolved, the Old Market continues to reflect the city’s historical continuity, connecting the past with modern daily life.
